Master Class Photography Course V

This workshop takes a deep dive into many inspiring magazine photos. Most editorial shoots are done outdoors and shot at many locations and various times of the day. From full sun to full shade, working in various lighting conditions can be a challenge for any photographer.

“Most magazine shoots happen on locations around the world, and our team spends a week on location. Our team travels with a full wardrobe team with over 100 outfit changes, accessories, shoes, jewelry, and makeup artists. Exciting, challenging, and sometimes exhausting, being a fashion photographer is inspiring. Fortunately our lead shoot coordinator loves great food, so we get to eat at many 5 star resorts. Sometimes our shoots require food shots, so we get to shoot some food prepared by the finest chefs in the world.”

“For technical photographers this may not be the course for you. Although I do shoot in manual mode, I come from the film camera days where the light meter in camera dictated my settings. Adapting to digital cameras, I tend to look at a scene with my eyes, and change my mind on what I want to accomplish in a photo. For example, when using flash, I tend to use a diffuser to change the power of the light, I also run through ISO settings a lot. I tend to like ISO noise filters in post processing. I also may put my hand in front of the flash to lower the power output, so a lot of technical photographers may scoff at my approach. I even use ND filters for my lenses, so If you want to see my camera settings on a shot, they may not be accurate. I’ve bounced flash off of tree trunks, walls, even people to get the look that I want. I don’t always have the luxury of a lighting assistant, or a scrim set. so I am constantly looking for the best lighting conditions for my scenes. Sometimes that may simply be moving the model 5 feet over from the position that the art director intends.”

Michael shares his inspirational photography techniques with examples of simple and more complex lighting situations. Creative, classic, timeless photography.
