Masterclass Photography by the Sea
Join acclaimed photographer Michael Allen for an unforgettable Master Class photography workshop designed to elevate your photography skills to the next level. Michael brings two decades of professional experience, including his work as the staff editorial photographer for Southern Bride Magazine, his extensive background in the beauty industry, and his renowned portfolio of commercial, wedding, and celebrity photography. This hands-on workshop will focus on Inspiration poses from Michaels many trips to the tropics shooting editorial spreads for the magazine.
Michael loves natural light, His go to camera settings start at f 2.8 for soft buttery images. When the lights not right, Michael uses modifiers to boost the light. For bold colors, bright light and airy, adding additional natural light is vital to help images pop. When the suns out and overly bright, find ways to shoot in full sun! Take advantage of the shadows created by the scene. Michael cautions his fellow photographers not to blow out images. Over exposed images may not cut it for editorial print. With today’s post processing you can achieve that light and airy look after you take the photo, so be in tune with the rules of great photography. Looking at the 20 year history of Michaels photos, the trends come and go, but timeless, classic photos stand the test of time.
When I mentor photographers, the first thing I do for posing is to find the best light. The next thing I do is set up the models in the first shot, then I talk about flow poses that follow the first setup. Simple poses are usually the best. I try to avoid trendy poses that look like high school prom, or glamour shots of the 80’s. Keep it simple. Once the models are moving, they tend to get comfortable and that’s when the magic happens. I prompt the couple with ideas of poses, tell some jokes to get them laughing and comfortable with the camera.
I recommend for photographers to attend WPPI and spend time in the judging rooms. Listen, watch and learn what makes a really great photograph. Also find what critique they offer. Don’t get your feelings hurt, sometimes judging can be a wake up call. Enter the completion and hear what they think about your photo.
